My Jekyll blog.
This is my second Kieślowski movie, after Three Colours: Red. Irène Jacob, who incidentally stars in Red, plays doppelgangers Weronika, a Polish soprano singer, and Véronique, a French woman. The first act of the movie follows Weronika as she excels an audition despite no previous experience, prepares for the upcoming performance, gets flashed while having what looks like a heart attack à la Pnin, and sees her French look-alike Véronique on a tour bus. Sadly her first concert is her last, as her heart troubles make an encore and kills her onstage.
A thousand miles away, Véronique feels a pang of loss despite having never seen Weronika. The second half feels like Véronique trying to come to terms with this loss she hasn't even experienced, this void in her heart which has spontaneously formed. Or maybe Véronique is trying to live out the rest of Weronika's life for her, a transfer of agency of sorts? I'm not sure. In any case, like a lot of other art-house movies Kieślowski's need to be viewed multiple times for one to pick up on all the subtle-yet-crucial details. That's all.
